The 4 types of hair
We all know that just like skin, there are different types of hair, and sometimes we might find it hard to identify each. Determining your hair type is not so unnecessary as you might be thinking, it’s actually very important in order to define what kind of products you should be applying on it. It’s not as hard as you think either and we will give you all the tips on how to identify yours.
So, there are 4 different types of hair, and each type falls into 3 different categories, depending on the dimensions of the strands.
Type 1 Hair: Straight
The oiliest of all hair types, this one is very hard to get damaged and it is indeed super resilient.
1A: This hair type has none to very little body. It is so straight and is very vulnerable to knots because of its light structure. 1A type usually has a bright shine since the oils are very likely to reach the strand ends.
1B: It has a bit more body and It could hold a curl. Another differentiation is that it could actually fold a bit on the ends. It is in between light and thick structured hair.
1C: This hair type represents a thicker strand, therefore, it adds more body. It is the hardest to hold a curl because of its heaviness.
Type 2 Hair: Wavy
It’s somewhere between straight and curly hair. It has a defined S shape. This hair type is easy to define but returns to its natural shape very quickly
2A: Not so oily as Straight Hair and also less frizzy than the following two types. The main characteristic is that the strands are straight until the ear level and then it starts to wave.
2B: In this category the hair forms a more clear wave, but is still very close to the head, not giving the pumped up effect. The frizz starts to kick in here.
2C: The locks form waves all the way down in this hair type. This is the frizziest of the three categories, the texture is thick with a lot of volume. 2C has a very well-defined S shape.
Type 3 Hair: Curly
This hair type usually has a defined spiral shape. It is also more dry at the ends because of it’s form, the oil is not able to reach the extremities. It is also a very climate-dependent hair type. In very humid places it can provoke a lot of frizz.
3A: In this hair type, the curls are well defined without having to use any products or chemicals. From the three types of curly hair, 3A is the most hydrated.
3B: In this category, the curl is well defined, even though it’s a bit more frizzy than type 3A. This hair type has a dense and rough structure.
3C: Curls are the most defined in here. It indicates that the strands are very rich in texture making them compact together. The 3C type is also referred to as “curly-coily” hair.
Type 4 Hair: Kinky
Very fine, fragile and delicate by nature, it is also one of the driest of hair types, requiring better care. Each strand usually makes a zig-zag pattern. It normally keeps the same shape whether it’s wet or dry.
4A: The curls form a perfectly cylindrical shape, the strands are tightly coiled together creating a visible s pattern. Unlike the other categories in this hair type, this one is actually heavy enough to fall down.
4B: This category is often mistaken for the following one. The main difference is that in here the ends of the strands actually curl, when close to the root it doesn’t as much, however. This represents more of a “crimp” pattern rather than cylindrical curls.
4C: In this case, the hair strands form zig zags, with a greater range in hair texture. The strongest characteristic of this hair type is that the length of the strand is shrunk to half of its actual length. Type 4C is very delicate and has a super fine texture.
